GMC Yukon Tire Specs

Over a hundred years ago, General Motors was formed by acquiring another company which had already developed into the manufacture of trucks with a single cylinder engine. GMC is their unit which produces trucks and other SUVs and is one of the largest manufacturers in this segment. The GMC Yukon is their Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) which is available also as a hybrid model which gives a much greater fuel efficiency. The seating capacity of The Yukon is about 8 persons and it has a fuel efficiency for the standard model which is very good for its size.

Tires for GMC Yukon have a specification of P265/70R17. What do these figures mean?

P represents that the tire is meant for passenger cars and you would find the letter LT for light trucks.

265 or whatever other figure comes first is the width of the tire measured in millimeters. This will actually describe the contact patch that the tire makes with the road. so the bigger this figure, the better the road handling capacity of the tire.

The figure 70 is the aspect ratio and can vary. This is the height of side wall from the rim to the tread and the figure 70 expresses the percentage of the tread width. So the side wall in this tire would be 70 percent of 265 which is 185.5 millimeters. The side wall height affects the responsiveness you feel at the wheel and the ride quality. A lower aspect ratio can provide better response to turning, but will have a more jarring ride.

The alphabet R indicates that the tire is a radial.

The figure 17 indicates the diameter of the wheel that the tire is to be fitted on.

GMC Yukon Tires

There would be further information on the sidewall of a tire which would indicate its speed rating, maximum tire pressure, load carrying capacity and other details regarding the composition of the tire and its structure.

The Yukon is also available with tires that have the code P275/55R20.

These are the standard fitments with the GMC Yukon but alternate tire sizes would also be available with most dealers, and a customer would have to indicate his preferences before he concludes the deal for the vehicle.

Rims for the tire can be off aluminum or chrome if the dealer is asked for non standard fittings. The spare tire can be fitted at the back, which is lockable. Spare tires can also be mounted on a frame on the underside at the rear of the vehicle.
